Why this book was banned and censored.

Title: Milk and Honey

Author: Rupi Kaur

This book came into my life when...

My sister gifted it to me on my birthday.

Why was this book high vibrational?

With a summer sunset as my reading light and Kaur’s use of potent and punchy stanza styles, I was able to get from cover-to-cover in one sitting.

It’s an interesting book to process.

At first, we are the observer.

Then, we find we’re able to identify with some of the author’s experiences. Maybe a lot of them. All of a sudden, we feel like an active participant in the book - confronted with a personal journey through our own hurting, our own loving, our own breaking and our own healing.

Milk and Honey offers language to people who may be struggling to process or articulate similar experiences. This applies to the author’s encounters of ecstasy and passion, just as her moments of pain and suffering.

Although the book’s jet dark covering could be mistaken as an exclusively heavy read, Milk and Honey is a stunning tribute to the light, the power and the resilience of Divine femininity.

Having lived under capitalist systems which “normalise” the abuse and exploitation of women, Kaur celebrates the ways in which we transfigure this pain through art, sisterhood, standing up, using our voice, embodying love and kindness.

The response to the publication of Milk and Honey, speaks volumes. Since its release in 2014, the book has become one of the most frequently banned books in U.S schools “due to themes of violence and sexual assault”.

We observe the knee-jerk reaction to silence the voices of women and survivors of sexual assault who dare to stand up and tell their story.

Rupi Kaur responded to this online saying:

“The banning of books is the banning of culture and experiences”

A librarian in Oregon, one of states seeing the greatest opposition to the book remarked: "You all want to ban a measly little book, but not the situations it’s touching on."

Reader Warnings?

While the book addresses important and mind-expansive themes, it could also be triggering for some readers. Always take care of yourself first when consuming any media.
